One of the simplest gardening tools, which has been in use since the earliest stages of human civilisation, the watering can is still to be found among most people’s gardening tools. Easy, relaxing and safe to use at any age, the watering can has introduced generation after generation of children to gardening.
Today, watering cans are designed and manufactured with one thing in mind, and that is expediency. They come in ergonomic shapes, ensuring a quick and easy refill process, and are made from lightweight yet very durable materials such as high density polyethylene, which is used for a multitude of gardening products, or galvanised steel. They are also created for easy, comfortable transport and use. Many top-of-the-range watering cans now come with an all brass rose, which is specifically designed to release a light stream of water, for an optimal amount of control. Also, most watering cans nowadays are fashioned for operating with both hands, which makes them easier to use. Long reach spouts are also common as they are very practical.
The capacity of a watering can usually ranges from half a litre to ten litres, the largest in volume being intended for extensive use. Small ones, such as those with a capacity of half a litre, a litre or two litres are normally meant for indoor use, for instance on pots and raised beds. For a touch of fun, you can also purchase novelty watering cans, which come in adorable shapes, typically animal ones (particularly birds, due to the shape similarities).
