Most water butts are made from variations of plastic, some of them wholly made from recycled plastic, which makes them even more eco-friendly. Some however are made of high quality hardwood, such as beech. With regards to capacity, many water butts can comprise a hundred litres of water, although some have a capacity of more than 150 litres. In terms of structure, water butts always come with a lid and top, whilst some also provide a downpipe connector and linking hose and more complex water butts have additional features turning them into true irrigation systems. Moreover, to meet safety requirements, many water butts come with child protection stands or special opening mechanisms, for the same reason. Some are even wall-mounted, in order to fit into awkward spaces and still provide the same quality.
